On the street of West 44 between 5th Avenue and Avenue of the Americas lie Ivy League Clubs and swanky hotels. One in particular that is close to my heart is the Royalton Hotel and its upscale lounge, Bar 44. Modern, art deco, and definitely cozy, Bar 44 is one of those hidden treasures from the average tourist. Yes, it is a Hotel, but it’s easy to see the average crowd is more locals and business professionals than your average “weekend tourist”.

Upon entering Bar 44 through its large doors and brownstone exterior, you are instantly greeted by dark lighting and a cozy atmosphere. A bar in the front and in the back offer less time to wait for a drink, while table service along the left side is perfect for small or large groups. As you walk further towards the back bar, glass two way fireplaces, fur throws, and leather couches align the left side table and lounge areas. In true modern art deco fashion, you have to walk down the stairs to the tables which give great seclusion and the illusion of absolute privacy.
Although on the pricier side, the drinks are well worth it. The bartenders are knowledgeable of their trade, as they concoct obscure drinks without a hint of hesitation. With ingredients like crushed blackberries, cloves, or an array of old world liquors, you get caught up in the ambiance of being in a past time period. If not in the adventurous mood, they make a fantastic martini. The food and service are both good, but it is the ambiance and unusual simplistic feel that makes you think you were transported to a time of old Hollywood glamour.
