Many will say that the best part of the Oscars start way before the opening monologue. The red carpet is where the real action happens, when Hollywood’s elite come out donning their best couture. Last night there were many A-list celebs who knew just how to wow the crowd and some who missed the mark entirely (not naming names but what were you thinking Miss Les Misérables?!) You’ll probably come across many articles detailing the best and worst Oscar dresses so instead we decided to provide you with a recap on the most memorable styles of the night and how to incorporate these trends into your everyday fashion.
While she didn’t take home an Oscar for best actress, Jessica Chastain definitely claims best dressed of the night. Donning a sequined Armani Privé gown, Chastain looked flawless with her flowing red locks and rouge lip to match. The nude dress covered in sequins complemented Chastain from head to toe, refraining from overpowering the fair-skinned actress. A great color for spring, nude is such a versatile color as almost everyone can pull it off. Rachel Zoe’s self-named fashion line offers her own take on the sequined nude dress in the Tinsley Mini. Even better, it’s currently on sale for $357.
One thing can be agreed upon from last night’s Oscars: The Bow is Back! Reese Witherspoon and Zoe Saldana were just a couple of the leading ladies to don the sweet accent but no one seemed to wear it as well as Kerry Washington. Taking a fashion risk by wearing a coral Miu Miu gown, Washington’s dress featured a beaded bodice and a demure bow. When done right bows can be the ideal accent for a special occasion dress. Asos does a perfect job of incorporating the bow without looking like an Alice In Wonderland costume in their Paprika Swing dress for $54.
Jennifer Lawrence won big last night and her dress was fit for an Oscar-award winner. Lawrence looked like the bell of the ball in her ample Christian Dior Couture gown but was most talked about was her backwards necklace. While any necklace can be worn on the back, longer is definitely better. When trying the trend, opt for a simple necklace such as Urban Outfitters’ Melbourne Geo Necklace and a backless shirt to show off your statement piece.
Les Miserables’ Samantha Barks looked effortless in Valentino. My personal favorite of the night, Barks’ plunging deep-V made her simple black gown one of the sexiest dresses on the red carpet–the subtle pockets were the cherry on top. Alice + Olivia features a similar style in their Abney Dolman Wrap Dress, currently on sale online for $123. For those brave enough to wear a deep-V remember to stay with solid colors and keep make-up and jewelry understated.
Naomi Watts stunned in Armani Privé last night. Metallic sequins (another sequined dress!) and an enticing cutout made this dress the showstopper of the night. Cutout dresses have been a big hit all season long and many hope the trend continues into spring/summer fashion. While we can’t all look as hot as Watts did last night, Zara’s Jacquard Pattern Cut-out Dress for an affordable $60 bucks is a step in the right direction.
